Bottom Line
The Logitech Harmony 1000 is easy on the eyes with its big, bright LCD touch screen and brushed-metal styling. You also get the same legendary ease of use and dead-simple setup Harmony remote users know and love. That's why it's a shame this device relies mainly on software buttons that are tough to press and aren't very configurable.
The Harmony 1000 is one slickly crafted remote. It's got a big, beautiful, color touch-screen LCD that's roughly 3 by 2 inches. The case also has a nice brushed-metal top with several hard buttons, too. But although the device looks really nice, I suggest you wait to try it before you run out and buy it.
Logitech Harmony Remote 1000 Software
The Harmony 1000 uses the same computer-based installation software as previous Harmony remote models such as the Harmony 890. It's easy to use, and clear instructions guide you through the process of setting up the remote to control your equipment. The remote uses an activity approach, meaning that you program the device based on what activity you want to accomplish. The software walks you through the steps of specifying what needs to occur to make that activity happen. Once you're done the programming, if you want to, say, watch a DVD, simply push the 'Watch a DVD' button on the remote. Your TV should then turn on and change to the correct input. Your receiver also should power up and switch to its DVD setting, and, of course, your DVD player will activate as well.
This methodology makes Harmony's devices among the easiest remotes to hook up and operate. With this ease, however, comes a lack of flexibility. The majority of the buttons on the 1000 are provided via the remote's touch-screen display. For example, play, pause, fast forward, and reverse appear directly on the LCD as virtual keys. These software buttons can be tricky to use. I don't have particularly large hands, but I often had trouble with accidentally hitting the fast-forward button when I wanted to push play. In fact, the majority of the on-screen buttons are just too close together. Unfortunately, there is no way to move the buttons within the configuration software. I'm not a big fan of soft-button remotes to begin with, but at least with models such as the Philips Pronto, you have the ability to customize the display. The Harmony 1000 software limits you to Logitech's designed screens. Granted, this makes setup a breeze, but it really hampers usability.
Another problem I had with the buttons is that many of the labels are cut off because the buttons are too small—although you can edit the labels. Still, it would be nice if the labels generated by the software could have their font size adjusted or if the text would scroll. For example, with the stellar Harmony 890 remote, text automatically wraps on the programmable semisoft buttons if their labels run over.
The 1000 sends both IR and RF signals. Unfortunately, it does not come with a RF receiver. I suppose that was a decision made to keep the price down, especially considering that some people may not need the RF capability. Luckily, I had my RF receiver on hand—the one that comes included with the Harmony 890. As with the Harmony 890, when you program the 1000 to send signals via RF, you also need to plug in the RF receiver for programming. Once the 1000 and RF receiver were configured, I was quickly sending signals to my equipment, which was hidden out of sight. The IR signal worked well also. It appeared to be strong, as I was able to control components located in the back of my room even with the remote pointed toward my projection screen in the front.
Logitech Harmony Remote Software
On the whole, the Logitech Harmony 1000 is a decent remote. It's incredibly attractive, which might outweigh some of its problems for some people. Also, setup, as with other Harmony remotes, is a breeze, and the vast database of supported devices is outstanding. But if you've never used a soft-button remote before, make sure you try it before you buy. The only feedback you get from the LCD buttons is a little click noise to let you know that you've actually pushed it. This sound, even on the highest setting, can be drowned out by evenly a mildly loud movie. In addition, not being able to rearrange the buttons on the LCD could be a problem for some people, especially those with large hands.
Logitech Harmony 1000 Drivers
In the end, if looks are a big factor in your decision, go with the 1000. But if you want to spend a little less and get a more usable remote, I'd recommend the Harmony 890.
